My Overall Thoughts
I want to start by saying that Jeaniene Frost is an amazing author and I can say that after only reading 2 of her novels. I was actually recommended this series by the author Kristin Cast on Twitter–she kept raving about how good these books were and I must admit, she was not lying. As I’m sure you’ve noticed, I’m starting off with the second book in the series and not the first (Halfway to the Grave) because I read that one months before I started this blog. So throughout this review I might add some thoughts about the first book in the series. The first book ended with such a bang that I took to Twitter to express my broken heart and wouldn’t you know it, Jeaniene Frost reassured me personally that my heart would be put back together. One Foot in the Grave did not disappoint. It was a great read and I couldn’t put it down– I literally stayed up super late one night reading and had to force myself to put it down and go to sleep. I can’t wait to see what Cat and Bones will be up to in the next book in the series.
Pros
There are so many things I love about this book. One of the things that got me so attached to this series was the relationship dynamic between Cat and Bones. In a weird way, I’m jealous of the lengths Bones will go to for Cat and how he turns into a no nonsense kind of guy when it comes to her. He’s very protective of his Kitten and won’t let anyone (and I mean anyone) disrespect her. I’m also absolutely entranced with how Bones is portrayed to sound! Some of the words he uses are just pure entertaining and I think it adds to high likability. I know it probably has to do with where he is originally from and the century he was born in, but words like knackered and bloke (and MANY, MANY others) just spoke to my heart. Add all of these things to the speech that Bones give to Cat to show her the depth of his commitment and that makes me Team Bones for sure. This should go without saying, but Bones is definitely SWOON WORTHY! I didn’t think so at first, he was such a jerk but I definitely changed my mind. Frost, also isn’t scared to kill characters off which I really like because you never know what’s going to happen. And then there’s the interesting fact of just because they die doesn’t mean they are dead.
Cons
However, there were a few shortcomings to the book in my opinion. Nothing too horrible, but that’s why I couldn’t rate the book 5 out of 5 stars. To start with, I was extremely disappointed that 4 1/2 years passed by between the first and second books in the series. I understand it’s realistic that it took that long for Bones to keep his promise to Cat, but it angered me a little (ok, a lot!). I’m just glad I didn’t have to wait the 4 1/2 years for this. I was also a little thrown off by time jumps in the first couple of chapters. To be honest, I didn’t really like that a month would pass between chapters. Another aspect I was a little disappointed with is how the promise was kept–nothing like I was expecting and it was kind of a let down. But I got over that so quickly because I was just happy that the promise WAS kept that nothing else really mattered. One more tiny thing that became a little annoying, is that Cat sometimes acted like a 5 year old girl throwing a temper tantrum when it came to Bones–which, I guess if you think about it, is how girls act when they are in love. I loved when Cat decided to woman up and claim what was hers!
